Introduction

In this unit you need to show that you know the basics about what a graphics card does and how provision of additional graphics processing has changed over the last few years. Many laptops, for example, nowadays have an on-board graphics processing utility rather than a separate card and appear to meet many users needs quite adequately. What used to be one of the most expensive parts of a computer may not be so now.

The main part of this unit, however, is all about understanding the different file formats used for graphics, what makes up the file size of digital images and how it is calculated and how compression techniques can offer a balance of file size and quality for different uses - e.g. printing vs web site illustration.

You will have a project to create a digital image comprising various elements for a client and will need to document how you went about creating the finished versions.

You will also need to demonstrate an awareness of copyright and licence terms and, for higher grades, to be able to evaluate developments in display media and the impact these may have on image use and requirements.
