I have just produced a sort of introductory manual
for Dreamweaver which is a pretty good exercise to start off
with. Check out the notes page under web design and Unit 11
under courses which has several tasks.
Evaluating web sites exercise
can be accessed here: useful
for all students using sites for research!
Note: 'advanced' refers to the
level 3 IT2000 series of units which all have the title Advanced.
The web design skills required are still fairly basic but
sufficient to produce an attractive and appropriate standard
of linked pages comprising a working web site. In my view
web design should be taught as part of an introduction to
computing as it is becoming such an important skill and software
now available makes so many of the tasks involved much simpler,
with a mere smattering of html code knowledge being needed,
and achievable by virtually anyone who can handle text and
image processing reasonably proficiently.
'Advanced web design' is something
else altogether and should require competence in html, javascript
and server-side features as well as sound graphic design,
image management and site evaluation skills.
