Scenario

You have a session to deliver in a short while. You have some notes in various documents and an image or two that you would like to refer to in class as well as a number of links to useful web sites. Yes, you could just print the notes and images and copy the links onto a handout and give them to your students, but you’d like to have them available on screen in the session. In particular you’d like to be able just to click on the links and get access to the sites and present the notes in a simple way so that students can refer to the ones they need. Putting everything on-line will also mean people can look through things in their own time.

You also have some text that you’d like the group to work on, making suggestions for changes, and have a way to store the results without losing the original.

You have good internet access but haven’t a clue how to create web pages. There is a VLE but you’re pretty new to using it and don’t feel very confident in getting a page set up that will do all that you want. You could do a simple link, though, to a web page.

Objectives

  • To create a web log featuring your notes / handout text and images
  • To create a web page that contains links to the notes or handout headings, to the other web sites required and to a document that the group can work on together

What you will do in this activityNovember 20061 Create a web log using Blogger and add some notes to it 2 Edit your images using Picasa and send them to your web log 3 Create a wiki using pbwiki and add some text, collaborating with others on revising it to include links and correcting mistakes 4 Create a web page using Pageflakes that links these resources in one place and provides space for further information or guidance

What resources will you need? For the activity: * Sample notes or handouts will be provided as well as a selection of images that may need a bit of editing * Sample web site addresses will be provided * An empty web log will be set up for you to add items to * An empty web page will be provided * Picasa image editing software will be available on your computer * An empty wiki will be set up for you To do this on your own: We’ll provide instructions covering how to create a new web log using Blogger, setting up a Pageflakes account and setting up a wiki. These require access to an e-mail account so that you can receive your personal account details and verify them. You would need to download the Picasa software and install this onto your computer, or ask IT support staff to do so at your organisation if necessary.
